New Music: Radiohead’s Revolutionary Video Shot By Frickin’ Sharks With Frickin’ Laser Beams Attatched To Their Frickin’ Heads*July 16, 2008 at 7:54 pm | Posted in Music | 2 Comments
*This post title is not entirely accurate. It just gave me an excuse to use the photoshopped image I made to the side.
The fact that [something with a made up name called] the global blogosphere would go nuts over a video a week before it was actually released means that I, too, have to blog about it upon it’s release. Radiohead have just released a new video for its song “House of Cards” from the album “In Rainbows” and it’s very pretty.
No cameras or lights were used. Instead, two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.
“In English, Doc!” I hear you scream. Well, pretty pictures made from loads of data dots go with music. Feel free to watch the making-of video to learn about how the video was made and the various technologies that were used to capture and render 3D data. The cool thing about the video being made of data rather than images is the fact that the data has been released to be messed around with on Google Code’s Visualizer. Try it out now. You can see what it’s like to see Thom Yorke’s face from the inside. Sure, it’s kinda creepy but you should get used to it. It’s the future. Fans are also invited to mess around with the data to create their own YouTube videos here.
The actual video and some other very similar videos can be seen after the break. By “very similar”, I mean they’re similar in a “cool, colourful and ideal as a desktop screensaver” kind of way.
Here’s the brand new video from Coldplay wannabes Radiohead with “House Of Cards”:
Here’s last year’s “LoveStoned/ I Think She Knows” by Justin Timberlake:
Here’s 2003’s “Staring Ar The Sun” By TV On The Radio:
Here’s the trailer to 1983 Videodromes which would have videos like the ones above seduce poor James Woods:
I meant to post the Radiohead video two days ago but instead decided to nearly saw off my thumb but I stopped before reaching bone. It’s a basic hazard of my work environment. Wait, did I not mention what it is I do for a living? It’s being awesome. Sorry, I’ll get my coat.
